Rob: 'I Wrote Little Suicide Notes as Edward'
Twilight heartthrob recalls intense pre-filming preparationTwilight sensation Robert Pattinson totally immersed himself in his brooding Edward Cullen character months before filming began. In fact, he says he even wrote little suicide notes to articulate the tortured mindset of his on-screen alter ego.
"If you really prepare for a role, there’s going to be a moment in which he’s all you can think of," Rob, 22, recounts. "So I did things like [write] little suicide notes. I was a little worrisome, actually (laughs)."
What triggered this morbidity in the usually-cheery Brit was when he started keeping a journal as Edward in the weeks before shooting began on Twilight. Understanding the vampire's morose mindset was key to fully inhabiting the role.
"I hadn’t realized how difficult it was going to be to play Edward until I started reading the script," says Pattinson. "He’s a very complex character, so I moved to Portland (Oregon) by myself two or three months before filming began and didn’t do anything but read the script and books to find anything that helped me play him. Then I started to write things."
Edward's sullen personality is partly due to his existential loneliness. Before he met Bella, Edward had walked the earth for 108 years but never found true love or any real reason to want to live. "He has nothing to live for and all he wants to do is either become a human or die," explains Rob.
"The only reason that he hasn’t died is because he is too scared; he doesn’t think that he has a soul," says Rob. "Then he meets Bella, who makes him feel feel alive again."
But Pattinson, who is set to reprise his role in New Moon, the sequel to Twilight, embraced Edward's complex personality and ultimately ended up liking him a lot.
"Edward has a certain aura that makes people be scared of him instinctively and they don’t know why," says Rob. "I really love that, but I think that’s hard to show on-screen so I imagined him as a lion who was in the jungle surrounded by animals. They know he’s not hunting but they keep their distance. And that was something I really wanted to add to the movie."
As soon as filming wraps on New Moon, Rob will begin shooting Eclipse, the third installment in the Twi series. But Edward's supposed to look like an ageless 17-year-old human boy. How will Rob keep the character looking young? "With botox," he jokes. "No, actually I am a bit worried about that. I don’t know, I guess we’ll have to shoot them pretty quickly."
New Moon comes out in theaters Nov. 20.
